Penguin 2.0 was rolled out on 22 May 2013. Since 2011 search industry has witnessed a lot of changes and Penguin 2.0 algorithm update by Google is a continuation of the measures taken by Google to improve the quality of results displayed on SERP. This algorithm update by Google has hit hard on the websites that were a part of content network and used it as a measure to inflate their search engine rankings. As per Matt Cutts, head of Google Web spam team around 2-3% of the English-Us search queries are affected by Google Penguin 2.0. From past one month or so, Search industry was abuzz with the reports of a new generation algorithm update by Google and Penguin 2.0 has really lived up to the expectations. There have been reports of many websites losing their rankings.

Problem: Low Valued Links
- Links from low quality web directory/social bookmarking website/guest post/classified sites.
- Links from less authoritative websites having low SEO metrics (Domain authority, page rank, Alexa rank, traffic of the site etc.)
- Irrelevant/out of context links from websites that do not match with your niche.
Solution: The foremost step to get out of this problem is to analyze your link profile. Use Google webmaster tool to create a list of backlinks pointing to your website.
From this list do manual checking to find out the low valued links that are harming your website. Following links can be considered low valued links:
- Paid links
- Advertorial links
- Links from de-indexed sites
- Links from sites having low Page rank, Domain authority, Alexa etc.
- Links from sites having no or invalid contact information.
- Links from banned, hacked and spammy domains.

After identifying the low quality links to your website, contact the respective webmasters to remove these links from their website. Maintain a copy of all the communications for future use. Some of the webmasters may acknowledge your request and will do you the required favor while others may ask for some charges to remove your links from their website. Make a list of all such links and disavow these links using Google Disavow tool. Acquiring too much back-links in a short time frame may also invite penalty from Penguin 2.0.
Problem: Anchor Text
Reason: To get ranking for a particular keyword, most of the people have started using exact match anchor text in the links. Penguin is strictly against such manipulative techniques for improving web exposure.
Solution: There should be diversity in anchor text. Make it look more natural. Don’t over optimize it as it may make your website look suspicious to Google. Avoid using same anchor text during link building process. Try to use brand name as anchor text or go for minor changes in anchor text to make it look more natural. Try to maintain a proper ratio between various anchor text while moving with your branding or networking strategy. Make sure that your anchor text should be in proper context with the link and is related to the niche of your website.
Problem: Low Quality Content
Reason: Low quality content tarnishes the online reputation of any business. The term low quality content imply content that is duplicate in nature, missing and is aimed at focusing on keywords only.
Solution: Publish high quality unique content on your blog or website. Make your content informative, useful and valuable for the readers. Add worth to your content by providing links to reference websites wherever necessary. Keep keyword density between 1-3%. Make your keywords look more natural and relevant to the context of the text present there.
